POLS 1000 - American & Wyoming Government


An introduction to the ideas and concepts behind the growth and development of the governments of the U.S. and Wyoming and the political processes associated with them is provided in this course, which fulfills the statutory requirements for instruction in the provisions and principles of the state and national constitutions.

Instructional Method Lecture

General Education Requirement: US and Wyoming Constitutions
Comments: This course satisfies the same requirement at UW.

Prerequisites:
Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, ENGL 1010 English I, or instructor consent.

Minimum Student Competencies
Upon completion of POLS 1000 American and Wyoming Government, the student will:

  1. Identify the common elements of all governments including how and why they exist.
  2. Summarized the key features of the U.S. and Wyoming constitutions.
  3. Identify how and why the U.S. constitution significantly influences political outcomes.
  4. Characterize the effects of the separation of powers and federalism on the government of the U.S.
  5. Explore the ways in which the media influences politics.
  6. Contrast the way political parties and interest groups affect the U.S. political system.
  7. Characterize how the outcome of U.S. elections is influenced by their rules and structures.
  8. Illustrate an understanding of the major influence on the public policy process.
