ASL 1700 - American Sign Language III


This course is the advanced level of American Sign Language and emphasizes development and refinement of comprehension, production and interpersonal skills covered in ASL 1500 and 1600.  Students will increase accuracy and fluency in expressive and receptive sign skills.  Students expand communication skills while learning complex grammatical features.  This course explores Deaf culture and Deafness as a minority culture.  Full emersion methods are employed to enhance the student learning process.

Prerequisites:
ASL 1600 American Sign Language II

Minimum Student Competencies
Upon completion of ASL 1700 American Sign Language III, the student will:

  1. Illustrate advanced signing skills through sign accuracy using appropriate handshape, palm orientation, location and movement.
  2. Support expressive signing skills through advanced construction of ASL grammar and structure.
  3. Evaluate signed samples for accuracy in fingerspelling, “non-manual” grammar markers, role shift, classifiers, facial expression and advanced sign production.
  4. Interpret advanced complex ASL sentences and stories into English.
  5. Interpret advanced complex English and stories sentences into ASL.
  6. Assess and evaluate Deaf Culture perspectives as a minority culture.
  7. Summarize complex ideas through both receptive and expressive ASL skills.
  8. Combine advanced skills to accurately demonstrate complex sentence structures in ASL using appropriate vocabulary, classifiers, grammatical features and role shift.
  9. Compare and contrast hearing and Deaf cultural perspectives through research methodology. 
  10. Evaluate advanced language expression through idioms, Deaf poetry, religious signs, music and technical terminology. 
  11. Assess and utilize advanced ASL slang.
