Medical coders perform a vital function in the documentation of medical encounters. As the name implies, coders assign codes to diagnoses and procedures performed or identified by a physician. These standardized codes make it possible for health care providers to receive accurate and timely financial reimbursement from insurance companies and government programs such as Medicare.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Medical Coders will continue to increase at exceptional levels for at least another decade. Why? Because medical testing and treatment by health care professionals is becoming more complex and detailed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that the majority of Medical Coding positions will be in the offices of physicians, nursing care facilities, home care services, and outpatient centers.

There’s no better time than now to get the training you need to become a Medical Coder. Earning a Certificate of Completion in Medical Coding from Sheridan College and Gillette College is so convenient that you don’t even have to leave your house. The program is entirly online and is designed to be completed in one year. Once you have completed the training program, you will be prepared to move directly into meaningful employment as a professional Medical Coder.

The medical Medical Coding profession carries with it a comparable salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average yearly income for Medical Coders in 2002 was roughly $23,000, with the top 10 percent workers nationwide earning close to $40,000 per year. Those numbers are only expected to increase with the demand for trained Medical Coders.
