ANSC 2020 - Feeds and Feeding


This course is designed to provide students with a basic overview of nutritional concepts and their application to making feeding and management decisions for livestock production. Topics include nutrients and their utilization, feedstuff composition and identification, and the principles of ration balancing to meet animal requirements from maintenance through the various stages of production in important domestic livestock species.  This course is math intensive, requiring routine application of algebra and use of a calculator.

Credits: 4

Prerequisites:
ANSC 1010 Livestock Production with a C or better

Co-requisites:
MATH 1400 College Algebra or placement into Math level IV or higher.

Minimum Student Competencies
Upon completion of ANSC 2020 Feeds and, the student will:

  1. Discuss the importance of feeding and nutrition in the livestock industry.
  2. Describe the different types of digestive systems.
  3. Differentiate between the different types of digestive systems.
  4. Identify the primary classes of nutrients.
  5. Discuss the nutrient requirements for different classes of livestock.
  6. Discuss the nutrient requirements for different types of livestock.
  7. Explain how nutrient requirements are determined.
  8. Assess how feeds are evaluated.
  9. Develop a balanced ration for different types of livestock.
  10. Identify essential nutrients.
  11. Interpret the effect of an excess or deficiency of essential nutrients
  12. Identify various nutritional diseases, at they pertain to nutrition, in livestock.


Program Outcomes
Upon completion of ANSC 2020 Feeds and Feeding, the student will:

  1. Design solutions to real-world agricultural issues using the scientific method
  2. Analyze how governmental regulations apply to animal science
  3. Assess feed nutrients and how they are necessary for the health, growth and development of livestock
  4. Evaluate various types of livestock and their nutritional and economic contributions nationally and globally
