MUSC 2040 - Music Theory IV


This course is a continuation of MUSC 2030 Written Theory III, focusing on various topics including the application and analysis of post-tonal techniques. Theoretical systems studied include set theory, serialism, and major movements since 1945.

Prerequisites:
MUSC 2030 Written Theory III

Co-requisites:
MUSC 2045 Aural Theory IV and MUSC 2295 Keyboard Theory IV

Minimum Student Competencies
Upon completion of MUSC 2040 Written Theory IV, the student will:

  1. Analyze variations and rondo forms.
  2. Analyze sonata and related forms.
  3. Analyze various compositional techniques of the early 20th century, including the use of modes, scales, sets, and serial methods.
  4. Analyze the compositional techniques of a variety of post-World War II musical movements.
  5. Compose short pieces utilizing any of the compositional techniques studied during the semester.
