MUSC 1028 - Introduction to Music Therapy


This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of music therapy as well as an overview of several different approaches to music therapy with various clinical populations.  Aspects of the dynamics between therapist, client, and music are explored.

Minimum Student Competencies
Upon completion of MUSC 1028 Introduction to Music Therapy , the student will:

  1. Develop knowledge regarding music therapy as a profession, including historical background, current state of the music therapy discipline, professional music therapy organizations, clinical settings served, client populations and education and certification requirements for music therapy practitioners.
  2. Develop knowledge about the role of music and the music therapist in the music therapy process.
  3. Examine the musical self and investigate the human phenomenon connected with music.
  4. Develop an understanding of the theoretical bases of music therapy.
  5. Develop knowledge of music therapy treatment strategies with various client populations.
  6. Develop knowledge of the professional literature and individuals who have made significant contributions to the field.
  7. Identify and develop professional ethical standards maintained by those professionals holding the MT-BC credential.
