MUSC 1290 - Keyboard Theory I This course reinforces core music theory concepts through the development of rudimentary keyboard skills taught in a group setting. Emphasis is placed on the preparation for a piano proficiency exam required of most four-year music programs. First of a four-semester sequence, MUSC 1290 Keyboard Theory I covers keyboard and notation basics, five-finger positions and patterns, major scales, and primary triads

Minimum Student Competencies Upon completion of MUSC 1290 Keyboard Theory I, the student will:
- Realize standard music notation as a musical performance on a keyboard instrument.
- Execute simple technique (scale patterns and chord progressions) based on the five-finger position in a variety of keys.
- Transpose short musical compositions at the keyboard.
- Harmonize simple melodies using various accompaniment patterns.
- Demonstrate proper use of the sustain pedal.
- Improvise melodies and accompaniments.
- Sight-read musical works of appropriate difficulty.
- Prepare assigned repertoire so that it is recital-ready.
