Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Certificate

This program is designed to provide the students with the skills and technical knowledge to drive trucks, buses, delivery vehicles, for-hire vehicles, and other commercial motor vehicles (CMV). These vehicles follow the established state and federal laws for safety, weight, operational and physical standards for operation included in the training, this program will prepare students for obtaining their provisional commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Emphasis is placed on hands-on training with endorsement specific goals for the student. 

Program Outcomes:
  1. Identify the role that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) serves for commercial vehicle operations.

  2. Define what constitutes a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with the FMCSA.

  3. Develop the skills and abilities for commercial vehicle and/or other designated equipment operation

  4. Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

  5. Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and/or additional license endorsement, vehicle, or equipment operation training certification.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a valid Wyoming driver license
  • Must have a valid Wyoming commercial driver permit/CPL (see below)
  • Must have a valid Social Security number
  • Must have an original or certified copy of birth certificate
  • Must pass a DOT physical and be in good physical condition
  • Must not be under doctor’s care with work limitations to do assigned class and skills work
  • Must have no serious physical handicap which prevents safe vehicle operation
  • Must be English proficient or pass the English Proficiency Test administered at the college
  • Must be able to travel throughout the state of Wyoming
  • Vision screening is required by state and federal laws

Commercial Learners Permit

Wyoming Department of Transportation – Commercial License.

Generally, according to the WY DOT, if the vehicle you drive has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more or is designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or you transport hazardous material in an amount which must be placarded, then you are required to have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) to operate that vehicle.

Commercial drivers are subject to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations; therefore, you are required to present a current federal DOT Medical Certificate when applying for a Wyoming CDL license.

Federal DOT Medical Examiners Certification

All students are required to have their CDL Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before registering for the CMV 1700 Driving- Range, CMV 1750 Driving Over-the-road, and Passenger and Bus Endorsement courses. To prepare for the CMV 1505 Transportation Safety and Regulations course download the Wyoming Driver License Manual for Commercial & Heavy Vehicles (2017) and review the JJ Keller Air Brakes video.

This program does not qualify for federal financial aid.

Total Certificate Credit Hours: 16-19


Additional Information


Commercial Passenger or School Bus Endorsement (16 cr min) 

All courses listed in certificate program AND at least 1 endorsement course. Endorsement courses must be taken after a student receives CLP or CDL and course must be completed prior to the driving portion of the program for that vehicle.

Commercial Tractor Trailer Driver  (16 cr min)

All courses listed in certificate program, in the sequence listed.

Equipment Operator (may be taken for credit)

These courses may be taken with no required sequencing either individually or in combination with other courses in this program.

 

Additional Notes: A Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) is one that operates business, purposes including transportation vans, buses, delivery vehicles, semi-trucks with or without tractor trailers. The general definition of a commercial motor vehicle has several parts under the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration):

  1. A self-propelled or towed vehicle used to transport goods or passengers, with
  2. A gross vehicle weight rating or combination weight rating of 26,001 points or more, or
  3. Seats to transport more than eight passengers for money, or
  4. Seats to transport more than 15 passengers, not for money, or
  5. A bed or trailer to transport a large quantity of hazardous material.
