Associate of Arts/Associate of Science Degree Requirements

Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees

The Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees at NWCCD are designed to prepare students for transfer to an upper division baccalaureate degree program. The general degree requirements are designed to provide the student with basic competencies in communication and computation as well as exposure to subjects outside the student’s area of concentration. Specific requirements are designed to enhance the student’s skills in analysis, quantification and synthesis.

Students who complete the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degree should be accepted as junior level transfers at baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to work with his/her Advisor in obtaining transfer approval of courses taken at NWCCD from the institution to which the student plans to transfer. Students should keep syllabi and course descriptions to help with the transfer process. Transferability of courses is ultimately determined by the receiving institution. Documentation and knowledge of the transfer policy of the institution to which transfer is to be made is an integral part of the transfer process.

Foreign Language Requirement (AA Degree Only)

  • Foreign Language (two courses)

NWCCD Foreign Language Requirements

All candidates for the AA degree are required to complete the equivalent of 8 semester hours of work in a single foreign language.  Normally this requirement is satisfied by complete courses 1010 and 1020 with a letter grade of C or better in a single language, but completion of 1020 with a C or better also satisfies the requirement.  There are also other ways to satisfy the requirement (1) a more advanced language course with a grade of C or better also constitutes completion of the language requirement; (2) an advanced placement, AP, examination in the language with a score of 4 or higher satisfies the language requirement, as do CLEP scores.

Students who do not wish college credit for previous high school language study should register in classes appropriate to their level of training.  Those who have had two years of a foreign language in high school normally enter 1020 of that language, while those who have had three or more years of such study should take the AP exam while in high school or take the CLEP exam to determine the course in which they should enroll and to avail themselves of the opportunity to receive credit by examination.  Students in doubt about their ability should are advsied to discuss their options with a college advisor and/or language faculty member.  Students who have completed their language requirement can enroll in additional language courses of their choice.
