PEPR 2220 - Sports & Exercise Psychology This course provides students with an introduction to the theoretical and applied aspects of the psychology of sport and exercise. Students explore both historical and contemporary developments in the field as well as examine human behavior within the context of sport, exercise, and physical activity. Topics for this course include leadership, coaching, group processes, techniques for performance enhancement, promoting wellness, psychopathology in sport, and contemporary issues in psychology.
Prerequisites: PSYC 1000 General Psychology with C or better, or instructor consent
Co-requisites: None
Minimum Student Competencies Upon completion of PSYC 2230/PEPR 2220 Sports & Exercise Psychology, the student will:
- define exercise and sport psychology.
- describe how exercise and sport psychology contribute to the understanding of physical activity, exercise, sport, and athletic performance.
- compare the different areas of study that are related to sport psychology.
- analyze the different psychological factors that influence participation in participation in regular physical activity and exercise.
- contrast the primary differences between exercise psychology and sport psychology.
- apply psychological theories and research to sport and exercise behavior.
- identify skills related to sport and exercise psychology that can be applied as a coach, teacher, athletic training, or leader in health and fitness.
- evaluate the practical application of motivational theories as they relate to sports, physical activity, and exercise.
- summarize the impact participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity has on the psychological social make-up of an individual.
